Fighting Owls Drop Regular Season Finale

  • Opponent: Rowan Gloucester Roadrunners
  • When: May 7
  • Score: Harford 6 – Rowan Gloucester 9
  • Records: Harford 44-12 | Monroe 41-5
  • Location: Harford Sports Complex in Bel Air, Md.
  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls fell behind early, used the long ball to tie the game, but ultimately came up short against Rowan Gloucester in the regular season finale. Joe Sibeto and Ryan Calhoun both went yard in the contest but the team struggled to put the ball in play in big spots, striking out a season-high 18 times.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harford fell behind early as the Roadrunners plated a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second inning. JJ Ganzaroli hit a two-run homer in that three-run second inning.
  • The Fighting Owls' offense came to life in the fourth inning as they finally got on the board with a pair of runs after being held to just one hit through the first three frames. Joe Sibeto hit a two-run shot that just cleared the fence in left center.
  • In the fifth inning, Ryan Calhoun hit a game-tying three-run home run. Nick Rowland and Spencer Smith each drew walks and with one out, Calhoun smashed a shot to right center for his 15th home run of the season.
  • The Roadrunners played small ball and took advantage of some defensive lapses by the Fighting Owls to score a pair of runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third and two out, they scored two runs on a squeeze bunt and an error.
  • They added another run in the seventh on Neifi Mercedes RBI single.
  • Harford tried to rally in the eighth inning as Nick D'Amore doubled to lead off the inning. He came home to score on an RBI single by Matthew Shilling.
  • That would be the last run the Fighting Owls would score as the offense just couldn't figure out Mike Biasiello who came on in the fifth inning and proceeded to fan 12 batters over 4 2/3 innings. As a team, Harford struck out 18 times in the game.

  • The road to Grand Junction begins on Thursday as Harford will host the Region 20 Championship. The Fighting Owls will be the #2 seed in the double elimination tournament. Chesapeake will come in as the #1 seed while #3 seeded Potomac State and #4 seeded Hagerstown round out the field.
  • The Fighting Owls will take on Potomac State in the opener on Thursday at 1 PM. The teams split a doubleheader in Keyser on April 22nd.
  • The winner of that game will play the winner of the second game of the day between Chesapeake and Hagerstown on Friday. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the winner advancing to the District Championship.
