Baseball Soars Past Wake Tech, 5-2

SUMTER, S.C. – The Harford baseball team rallied for a three-run sixth inning to defeat Wake Tech, 5-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Owls (2-2) gave up a 2-0 lead in the top half of the sixth but came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to notch their second win of the season. Billy Kral (1-0) came on in the sixth to limit the damage and then retired the side in the seventh to lock down the win.

Lou Testa played a prominent role in the scoring for the Fighting Owls. He led off the fourth inning with a home run to get Harford on the board first. The solo blast of the scoreboard in left was his first of the season as well as the first hit in the game for either team.

In the sixth Testa was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Justin Brown pinch ran for Testa and scored the winning run. Brown advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Nolan Charleton drew a walk and stole second. Brown and Charleton both scored on a bloop single by Darius Barton. Barton would eventually score on a single up the middle by Matthew Shilling.

The Harford pitching staff was excellent, holding the Eagles hitless through the first five innings and allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks in the contest. Five pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters over seven innings.

Mike Taylor made the start for Harford and struck out five of the six batters he faced over two perfect innings of work. Matt Gorman followed up with two strikeouts and two walks over 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. John Torres came on in relief and retired all five batters he faced.

Thomas Hojnacki drove a run in on a single up the middle in the fourth inning to give Harford a 2-0 lead.

Harford faces USC Sumter (5-3) at 10 A.M. and Wake Tech (5-3) at approximately 12:30 P.M. on Sunday at Riley Park.
