SEWELL, N.J. – For the first time in four years, Harford baseball was forced to settle for a tie in a regular season game.
The Fighting Owls battled Rowan College of South Jersey – Gloucester through 10 innings to a 5-5 stalemate. The culprit? Darkness.
Pitching and defense dominated through the first six innings. Harford starter
Nick Hohenstein surrendered just one run on three hits while striking out a trio of Roadrunners through four innings. Fighting Owl reliever
Joe Clancy picked up the mantle from there, tossing aside seven of the 13 batters he faced via punch out.
RCSJ took the first lead of the day, picking up one run third on an RBI-single. Harford's offense finally woke up seventh and eighth, scoring five runs across the two innings to capture a 5-1 lead.
After walking a pair, Clancy was relieved by
Connor Blantz in the eighth. The redshirt freshman surrendered three runs (one earned) before navigating Harford out the jam. Blantz returned for the ninth and almost saw the game slip out of his fingers, as an RBI-double from RCSJ tied and nearly won the game for the Roadrunners. A relay throw from second baseman
Patrick Campbell found catcher
Matt Rivera just in time to record the out at home and keep the game tied.
Freshman arm
Hunter Bell stepped in to stop the bleeding, striking out the first batter he faced to retire the Roadrunners. After Harford stranded runners on second and third in the 10
th, Bell would sit RCSJ down in order in the bottom half of the frame. With no stadium lighting at the Roadrunners' field, umpires were forced to call the game at that point due to darkness.
Harford move to 6-0-1 after the draw, while RCSJ heads to 1-0-1.
