BEL AIR, Md. – Missed opportunities and errors led to Harford's first loss of 2021, as the Allegany Trojans defeated the Fighting Owls 9-6 at home on Saturday.
Allegany flipped the script from game one and took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first and four in the second. Harford could only muster up a solo home run via
Andrew Sicinski, leaving them lagging behind 6-1 after two.
Things picked up again in the fifth, with the Trojans getting one run home on a Harford throwing error to move ahead 7-1. The Fighting responded in the bottom the inning, loading the bases for
Blake Mayberry who would bring everyone home on a grand slam to cut the deficit to two.
A pair of RBI-singles tipped Allegany's advantage up to 9-5 in the sixth, but Harford looked prime to answer again in the bottom half of the frame as they loaded the bases once more. It was not meant to be on the second time around, as the Fighting Owls rolled into a double play to end the inning.
Mayberry delivered the last sliver of hope with two outs in the seventh, smashing his second homer of the day deep to center field to pull Harford within three. Two batters later and the game would end on a flyout to right.
Harford falls to 7-1-1 (7-1 MD JUCO) after the draw, while Allegany improves to 2-3 (1-3).
