GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - For the first time in program history, the Harford men's lacrosse team will compete in an NJCAA Championship Final.
The No. 2 seeded Fighting Owls took down No.3 Genesee, 15-9, Saturday afternoon in the NJCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship semifinal.
Harford outshot the Cougars 10-5 through the opening 15 minutes and went up 2-0 to start the game. Genesee fought its way back in and tied the contest at 2-2 with back-to-back scores to end the quarter.
The Fighting Owls took more chances (18-10) again in the second, but Genesee proved to be more efficient with its shots. The Cougars eventually took the lead with 4:42 left before half, but a one-minute penalty against Genesee for cross-checking allowed sophomore
Cayden Onagi to tie the game on the man-up advantage.
An illegal equipment penalty on Genesee gave Harford yet another man-up advantage to end the quarter, with
Gaige Lennon making the Cougars pay 42 seconds later to put the Fighting Owls up 7-6 at the break.
Harford turned to freshman
Aden Walsh in net for the final 30 minutes and the Canadian frosh did not disappoint, making five saves in the third and three more stops in the fourth to shut down the Cougars. The Fighting Owl offense soared over the same period, pumping in four goals in each of the final two periods to come away victorious.
Cayden Onagi led the parliament with five goals on the afternoon while
Trevor Sousa,
Caden Cote and
Pete Behrens chipped in two goals each.
Harford moves to 9-0 for the year.
