HAGERSTOWN, Md. - A pair of eighth inning home runs tilted game one in Harford's favor, as the Fighting Owls edged Region 20 DI rival Hagerstown 9-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Game two witnessed both teams struggle on offense, but the Hawks of Hagerstown did just enough to earn the split.
Game 1 (Harford 9, Hagerstown 7)
After committing the last out in the seventh,
Ehi Okojie landed on second to start the inning via the extra innings runner rule. Karpathios saw strike one then took the next pitch deep to center for two.
Quinn Madden followed suit three batters later with a solo shot to put Harford up 9-6.
Joe Clancy surrendered his only run of the day in the bottom of the frame but got the next two batters to go down via pop out and fly out to end the game.
Clancy (1-0) tossed a gem in relief, striking out four over five innings. He allowed just two hits in the longest outing of his Harford career.
Joe Quelch finished 3-for-4 with two walks to lead Harford at the dish. Madden chipped in three RBI and three walks as well as a pair of hits.
Game 2 (Hagerstown 5, Harford 3)
A three-run third proved to be the difference in game two, as the Hawks slipped past Harford 5-3. Hagerstown received a strong performance from its pitcher Bryson Caballero, who tossed aside 11 batters in a complete game effort.
The Fighting Owls scored all of its runs on solo homers.
Andrew Sicinski and
Blake Mayberry went deep in the fourth while
Trey Cruz homered in the fifth.
Joe Quelch earned a base knock for Harford's fourth and final hit.
