Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Rebecca Volk

Women's Soccer Season Opener Ends in Scoreless Draw

Despite tremendous offensive effort, the Fighting Owls left Arnold, MD empty handed after their first game of the 2023 season. The Anne Arundel Riverhawks held onto a 0-0 draw in front of their home crowd, and kicked off their debut in NJCAA Division II.

The game witnessed a clash of tactics and skills from the opening whistle. Throughout the match, both Harford and Anne Arundel exhibited disciplined defensive formations, making it difficult for either team to break through and find the back of the net.

Harford's goalkeeper Evie Heinlein made 3 crucial saves, while Anne Arundel's goalkeeper thwarted 13 of Harford's goal-scoring opportunities.

The teams engaged in a spirited battle in the midfield, with Harford taking a total of 23 shots (13 on goal) and Anne Arundel attempting 5 shots (3 on goal). Freshman Saylor Bare lead Harford's attack with 5 shots, 4 coming on goal. Freshman Carly Hemmings also managed to fire off 5 shots, with just 2 finding the frame. The Fighting Owls secured 5 corners and denied the Riverhawks of any attempts.

While the scoreboard remained empty in terms of goals, the match was far from lacking in excitement and effort. The players from both teams left everything on the field, showcasing their determination in pursuit of victory.

Next up, the Fighting Owls travel to RCSJ Gloucester for their first non-conference matchup of 2023.
