Heinlein Named Player of the Week After Loss to Monroe

BEL AIR, MD - #8 Monroe College women's soccer displayed their strength and skill, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over the Harford Fighting Owls last night at Harford Stadium. Despite the home advantage, Harford struggled to break through Monroe's defense and maintain possession, despite their best efforts.

The first half of the match saw Monroe College take the lead in the 36th minute when Julia Meyer found the back of the net, assisted by Angel Fowler. Harford's defense faced pressure from Monroe's offense the entire period, allowing the Fighting Owls only one shot attempt in the entire half. Julia Skinner was able to break through the Mustang's midfield line and into the attacking half as the seconds ran down off the clock. From 35 yards out she released a shot that targeted the upper corner of the goal, however the Monroe keeper was able to get an outstretch hand to the ball and prevent the equalizer as the horn sounded for the end of the period.

The Mustangs continued to dominate in the second half, extending their lead with two more goals. Helida Gomes scored in the 60th minute, assisted by Katherine Neves. In the 78th minute, Angel Fowler added another goal, assisted by Louise Featherstone. The Fighting Owls managing multiple injuries and a very thin bench escaped the match with a 3-0 defeat, and will surely look for redemption towards the end of the season should they meet the Mustangs in a divisional matchup.

Overall, Monroe College displayed their offensive prowess with a total of 32 shots, including 20 shots on goal, while Harford only managed one shot in the entire game. Harford's goalkeeper Evie Heinlein made a valiant effort with 17 saves in the contest, while Monroe's goalkeeper made one save. Heinlein would be named NJCAA Division I Player of the Week following her outstanding performance. The Mustangs controlled the corner kicks, earning 5 compared to Harford's 1. The match featured a total of 12 fouls, with Monroe committing 6 and Harford committing 6.

Next up, the Fighting Owls host Harcum College in their first men's and women's home doubleheader of 2023.
