Johnny Powell was named the sixth head coach in Harford volleyball modern history in April of 2019.
In the 2019 season, Powell led Harford to a 14-11 record; a fourth place finish in the Maryland Juco Athletic Conference with an 8-3 record the program's best finish since 2016. They also compiled an eight-game win streak from Sept. 24 to Oct. 8. Within their wins, they swept the 4th Annual Knights Volleyball Tournament, hosted by CCBC Essex.
Under Powell's leadership in 2019, Harford secured three All-Maryland JUCO Conference Second Team selections: Gabrielle Pfaff, Maria Lopez, and Katelyn Berger. Additionally, under his tutelage, four Fighting Owls found their way into the Harford record book: Maria Lopez (Kills and Aces), Maddy Weyer (Assists), Gabby Pfaff (Digs) and Faith Hill (Assists).
Powell spent one season (2018) as a volunteer assistant coach at Morgan State University. Alongside current Bears head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, he helped lead Morgan State to its best record since 2015.
Prior to Morgan State, Powell served as as an assistant coach (2014-15) before being named head coach of the Harford Tech High School boys' volleyball program in 2016. In his two seasons at the helm, he posted a 20-10 record and lead the Cobras to two county championship appearances.
Powell has coached at the club volleyball level for more than five years. He is currently the head coach of the 16 Navy team, the club’s top national team in that age group.
An accomplished player turned coach, Powell played volleyball, basketball, and baseball at Harford Tech. He was named to the All-County first team for volleyball his junior and senior seasons. He continued his career at the collegiate level with NCAA Division III Stevenson University, playing four seasons for the Mustangs. While at Stevenson, he received his bachelors degree in Business Information Systems.
Powell was born in El Paso, Texas and raised in Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany, before moving to Maryland in 2003. He currently resides in Havre De Grace, Md.
