BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women's soccer team gave up three goals in the second half within 20 minutes of each other as it fell, 3-0, to No. 7 Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon at Harford Stadium.
The Fighting Owls (2-2-0) held the Knights (4-0-0) to just six shots in the first half, while attempting five of their own as both teams played to a scoreless tie going into the second half.
Courtney Viera broke the tie at the 61:50 mark after a shot by Ashley Maisano bounced off Harford goalie, sophomore Jessica Stumpf (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), and Viera put the rebound into the net.
A little more than 10 minutes later, in the 74th minute, the Knights struck again, in much the same way, this time Alyssa Giudici's shot deflected off Stumpf, hit the cross bar, and Corinne Sherman corralled the ball and put it into the back of the net to give Rhode Island a 2-0 lead.
The Knights added their last tally at the 80:10 mark after Viera's corner kick was headed out by an Owl defender only to be gathered and fired into the upper right corner by Carlo Cano for the 3-0 advantage.
Stumpf recorded seven saves on the day, while her counterpart, Megan Belmont, totaled five, with both keepers playing the entire 90:00.
The Knights picked up two yellow cards, one at the 15th minute by Brittany Viera and one at 87:58 by Courtney Viera, while sophomore defender Eliza Burk (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) also received a card at the 87:58 mark.
Rhode Island outshot Harford, 18-8, including 12 total shots in the second period, while Harford held a 2-1 advantage in corners.
The Fighting Owls return to action next Tuesday, when they welcome Frederick to Harford Stadium for the first half of a day-night doubleheader with the men's team at 3:30 p.m.
