Baseball Earns DH Sweep In Walk-Off Fashion

Gray's Inside-the-Park Home Run Highlights Saturday Sweep

Ortiz V1 11
BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over conference foe Allegany on a walk-off, inside-the-park two-run home run by freshman outfielder Matt Gray on Saturday. The dramatic ending capped a day that saw the Fighting Owls win for the seventh time in their last eight games, topping the Trojans 15-12 and 7-6.

Harford improved to 8-4, and 2-0 in conference play, with the clutch hit. With Harford trailing 6-5, and down to its final strike, Gray sliced a line drive down the left field line that eluded the defender and squirted toward the fence. Gray sped around the base paths and was mobbed at home plate by the entire team.

The Fighting Owls totaled 22 runs on 23 hits on the day, and were an incredible 15-for-15 in stolen bases in the two wins. Nick Octavi threw out Allegany's lone base stealer in game one. Alex Riley was 6-for-6 on stolen bases, including 4-for-4 in game two.

Gm1: Harford 15, Allegany 12
Anthony Ortiz
provided the heroics in game one, playing with a heavy heart. Just one day after the passing of his grandfather, the freshman infielder collected a career-best five RBIs. Ortiz's two-out, two-run single in the third inning tied the game, 6-6, and in the next inning, he lined a two-run double off the top of the left field wall to put the Fighting Owls up 12-6. In the first inning, Ortiz beat the throw of a potential inning-ending double play, plating the Fighting Owls fourth run of the opening frame.

Cory Shaver went 3-for-4 in the first game, including a pair of perfectly placed bunt singles, one that was a squeeze play. The first baseman who is not known for being fleet of feet, legged out the second bunt after the ball trickled down the third base line and stayed fair by an inch. He also scored three times.

Jonathan Castro reached base safely all four times in the opener, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Octavi and Gray also collected a pair of hits in the win.

Corey Taylor earned the win on the hill to improve to 2-1. Dom Vattuone faced the minimum in the seventh to collected his first save of the season.

Gm2: Harford 7, Allegany 6
Gray's heroic blast finally wore down the Trojans in the nightcap. Harford fought and clawed the entire game after digging a hole in the early going with five fielding errors. The Fighting Owls had base runners in every inning, and scored in five different frames to earn the dramatic win.

Jason Seitler pitched six innings, striking out a career-high nine batters, but earned the no decision after giving up six runs, though just two of them were earned. Freshman Taylor Nelson pitched a hitless top of the seventh and kept the Allegany lead to just one run to earn his second win of the season.

Riley went 2-for-3 and scored three times in the second contest. Simon Beloff had a pair of RBI doubles in the win.

The Fighting Owls continue their 11-game homestand on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Lackawanna. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
