Baseball Runs Streak To Seven With Huge DH Sweep

BEL AIR, Md. - The comeback kids were at it again on Wednesday night. The Harford baseball team used two come-from-behind victories to increase its win streak to seven in a row with a doubleheader sweep of Lackawanna at home, 6-5 and 3-2.

The Fighting Owls trailed 5-1 in the sixth inning of game one before scoring four times in the frame to tie it, all without a single base hit, and executed a perfect suicide squeeze to plate the game winner of the opening contest. In the nightcap, Harford trailed 2-0 and clawed back for the 3-2 victory in exciting fashion.

Harford 6, Lackawanna 5
Freshman Cory Shaver laid down a perfect suicide squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh for Harford second consecutive walk-off winner.

Sophomore Alex Riley led off the inning with a walk and stole second. He advanced to third and almost scored on classmate Simon Beloff's one-out single through the right side, but head coach Tom Eller held Riley, knowing his power-hitting first baseman was coming to the plate. He then shuffled the cards and sent in the squeeze play for the win.

The Fighting Owls started the comeback in the previous inning, scoring four times on three walks, a hit-by-pitch and two errors. In the inning, Shaver executed another sac bunt to get his teammates into scoring position.

Dom Vattuone tossed 5.1 innings of work, and four other relievers entered the game to hold the Falcons at bay. Jamie Pashuck was on the hill when Eller called for a pitch out on his first pitch. The fifth-year head coach was right again, as pinch-runner Mike Accardi was trying a straight steal of home. Nick Octavi dove back toward the plate and easily recorded the out to end the sixth inning. Pashuck struck out his first batter of the seventh, and Mike Solomon came in and recorded the final two outs, one via the strikeout to earn his first career win.

Harford 3, Lackawanna 2
After falling behind 2-0 after the first four innings, the Fighting Owls put together a three-run fifth to claim their seventh straight and nine out of their last 10.

Ronnie Zeberlein and Riley started the frame with a pair of flares to right field, both of which dropped for hits. On Riley's, the right fielder kicked the ball and both runners advanced to scoring position.

Zeberlein scored on Octavi's grounder to the right side. After a strikeout threatened the end of the inning, a passed ball scored Riley and Shaver and James Wilson drew a pair of walks. With Shaver standing in scoring position, Anthony Ortiz crushed a single to left center, plating the winning run.

Jason Seitler pitched four innings of one-hit releif to earn the victory. He allowed just one unearned run while striking out five while walking zero. Corey Taylor started the game on a pitch count and tossed three solid innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out a pair.

The Fighting Owls are scheduled to play Catonsville on Thursday at 3 p.m. in a single conference game, weather permitting.
