BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford baseball team (24-7, 9-3 MDJUCO) split a home doubleheader against Germantown on Saturday. The Fighting Owls won game one 13-4 and dropped game two 4-3 when a runner was called out at home to end the game.
The victory in game one gave the Fighting Owls and fifth-year head coach
Tom Eller a 24-6 record, a program best through the first 30 games. Last year's team was 23-7 through the first 30 contests. Harford is now 9-3 in conference play and a staggering 15-2 when playing at the Harford Sports Complex.
Harford 13, Germantown 4
Harford rebounded from allowing four Germantown runs in the top of the third inning with an 8-run bottom of the third to take control of the opener. The Fighting Owls hit four consecutive doubles in the frame where 11 batters came to the plate.
Alex Riley slapped a single into right field, plating two runs to start the scoring in the frame, and
Jonathan Castro scored on an RBI-groundout by
James Wilson. Riley scored on a safety squeeze with just one out before the doubles parade came to the plate.
Simon Beloff doubled to deep center. He came around to score on
Christian Wolfe's two-run two-bagger.
Nick Octavi followed with his own double down the rightfield line and he scored on
Anthony Ortiz's double in the left center gap.
Beloff capped the scoring with a three-run home run to deep right-centerfield. He was one of four players with two hits and he knocked in two ruins, along with Riley.
The offensive explosion overshadowed another quality start from
Corey Taylor. The lefthander scattered four hits in five innings while striking out six.
Germantown 4, Harford 3
After spotting the Gryphons four runs, the Fighting Owls started chipping away at the lead. Harford plated one in the bottom of the six, and with two outs in the seventh, came roaring back, only to come up inches short.
After
Matt Gray put together a quality at bat, drawing an eight-pitch walk, he was standing on third base with two outs. Ortiz reached on a fielding error by the Germantown shortstop, plating Gray and making the score 4-2.
Wilson lined a single up the middle, putting runners at first and second for Beloff. The designated hitter crushed a double down the right field line. Ortiz scored easily, and pinch runner
Matt Logullo was called out at home on the relay from right field in a bang-bang play, ending the game.
Wilson went 3-for-4 in the contest, while Wolfe went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.
Jason Seitler earned the hard-luck loss on the hill to fall to 4-2 on the season. He allowed four runs on six hits in six innings, while striking out seven.
The Fighting Owls travel to Catonsville on Tuesday for a single contest starting at 3 p.m.
