Muffoletto Wins 100th Match In Home Opener, 3-2

Box Score
BEL AIR, Md. - Jason Muffoletto earned his 100th career victory as head coach of the Harford women's soccer program on Sunday. The Fighting Owls defeated CC of Rhode Island, 3-2, in the 2013 season opener.

Muffoletto's 100th victory on the sideline comes in the first match of his 10th season at the helm. The Fighting Owls never trailed, and led by two goals a two different points in the first half, but the milestone win was not secured until the final minute, when a CCRI penalty kick rolled wide with 20 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Madison Ferrara opened the 2013 season with a goal in the 12th minute off an assist from freshman Liz Fitch. Just four minutes later, freshman Evie Powell made the score 2-0 on a nifty goal with help from Savannah Humphreys.

The Knights had their first scoring chance in the game's next minute of action, and after a corner kick drilled off the post, Betti Worth cut the deficit in half with a one-touch marker.

On her birthday, sophomore Erica Henry sent a beautiful ball across the box to the head of classmate Korey Carroll to give Harford a 3-1 advantage, but Stepheny Perez closed out the scoring in the 36th minute on a long run from Paige Oram.

After intermission, freshman goalkeeper Madison Smith held down the fort, especially in the game's final minute. The Fighting Owls were whistled for a foul in the box with 20 ticks on the clock, but Smith stood her ground between the pipes as the penalty shot trickled just wide. Smith finished her collegiate debut with six saves.

The Fighting Owls also were held scoreless in the second half, but it was for lack of trying. CCRI goalie Alex Place played just the second half, but was forced to make nine saves, most of them point-blank stops. Humphreys had four chances after the break to pad the Harford led, but was denied each time.

Muffoletto now adds the 100th milestone victory to his mantle of success at Harford. The Fighting Owl lead owns a 100-44-11 career mark on the sideline as the women's coach, with three trips to the NJCAA DI National Tournament.

The Fighting Owls return to the pitch on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Harcum.
