BEL AIR, Md. - Freshman forward
Jalen Thompson scored the game-winning lay-up off an out-of-bounds play with 0.2 seconds remaining to give Harford an 81-79 victory over Globe Tech in both teams' season openers.
After blowing a 17-point halftime lead, the Fighting Owls had to hold off a furious rally by the Knights. Harford led 60-43 with 11:07 remaining, but Jonathan Grimsley and Globe began to claw back into it. Grimsley scored nine of Globe's 12-straight points to cut the deficit to five points in less than two minutes. The Fighting Owls were held without a field goal for 6:13 while the Knights got back in the game.
Once
Cedric Hines made a contested lay-up to extend the lead 63-56, Grimsley answered with five points to begin the back-and-forth, nail-biting finish. Harford never trailed in the second half, but after a Fighting Owls' turnover with 34 seconds left in a 79-77 game, Dan Jenkins knotted the score when he squirted free under the hoop for the lay-up.
Jon Warren tried to go coast-to-coast for the game-winner but lost the ball out of bounds on a contested lay-in with 1.2 seconds remaining, setting up the final play. Hines inbounded the ball under the hoop and while looking to his left, Thompson was left wide open on the right block for the easy winner.
