BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford men's basketball team let one slip away at home to Montgomery on Wednesday, falling in overtime, 91-85. The Fighting Owls led by six with 24 seconds left but were atrocious from the line in the MD JUCO loss.
Â
The game looked to be all but over after Harford made a tremendous second-half surge and the Raptor head coach let his emotions spill over into a frustration technical foul. Harford led 74-69 and just collected a clutch steal by
Cedric Hines when he was fouled with 24 ticks on the clock. The Fighting Owls went to the line for four free throws with a chance to put the game out of reach.
Jalen Thompson would miss both technical free throws and Hines would net just one of his two attempts to push the lead to six. After a missed 3-pointer by Montgomery's D'Angelo Vaughn with 17 seconds left, Patrick Smith collected the rebound and connected on the lay-up but was also fouled by
Fadil Robinson with 14 seconds left. Smith made good on the old-fashioned three-point play to give the Raptors a chance.
Two more missed free throws by
Jon Warren left the door open for Montgomery, and Vaughn buried a game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.2 seconds left, sending the game into the extra session. Vaughn continued to heat up in overtime, scoring seven points without missing a shot, as Montgomery stole a victory.
The Raptors shot 27-for-30 from the free throw line while the Fighting Owls were a dismal 12-of-31.
Robinson led the team and netted a double-double with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds.
Aaron McDonald added 14 markers off the bench and
Cedric Hines scored 13.
Jay Johnson and
Davonte Williams recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Fighting Owls travel to Anne Arundel on Saturday.
