Twice As Nice: Men Advance In 2OT

McHENRY, Md. - The No. 5 Harford men's basketball team (18-9) earned a double overtime victory over No. 4 Cecil (18-8) to advance in the 2016 MD JUCO Tournament at Garrett on Friday, 106-101. Cedric Hines' lay-up with 3.8 seconds left in regulation forced the extra time.

The Fighting Owls came out flat and trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, but rallied for a 42-35 deficit at the break. Then, Harford open the second frame on a 10-0 run in the first 2:47 to take their first lead of the game. The two teams traded blows down the stretch, with each team inching ahead and then giving up the lead.

With Cecil ahead 76-75, Hines missed a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left and Cecil got the rebound. The Seahawks made the first but missed the second, setting up Hines' game-tying lay-in.

In the second overtime, the Fighting Owls climbed back from an early deficit, but again, freebies were a struggle. Harford could have iced the game at the line, but a crucial miss allowed a last-chance option for Cecil. Dryon Jones missed a lay-up, but Dajour Diggs was wide open for the offensive board that he tipped in to extend the game to a second overtime, 90-90.

In the final extra frame, Harford used the momentum of a big triples from Aaron McDonald and solid defense down the stretch. An alley-oop to Evason Ogbonna was the eclaimation point on the victory.

Three Fighting Owls recorded double-doubles, but McDonald's 26 points and six triples was the difference. Jon Warren posted 22 points (8-of-14), 11 rebounds and four assists while Ogbonna stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Jalen Thompson chipped in with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Fighting Owls advance to Semifinal Saturday against top-seeded Garrett at 7 p.m.
