BEL AIR, MD- The Harford women's volleyball won a vital match against Baltimore City in four sets at the APGFCU Arena. The victory improves the Fighting Owls overall record to 12-3 and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
Going up against the only other Division I program in Region XX, the Fighting Owls understood the importance of winning this match. The two teams played earlier in the season at the Dragon Invitational, which Harford was able to win in a dramatic 5-set come from behind thriller.
This match had a much different feel to it as the Fighting Owls came out on fire in the first set winning it 25-9 and completing the set with a 9-0 run with server
Mary Snow picking up 4 aces in the run.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair with each team going on long runs, but the middle hitters from Baltimore were too strong and closed it out for the Panthers.
After that it was all Harford as the hitters from the home side really got into a rhythm.
Savannah Meyers and
Kyning Tillinghast in particular were fantastic as they combined for 20 kills and put a ton of pressure on the Panthers back line all night long. With the Fighting Owls regular libero
Rebekah Hanshaw out with an injury, the libero duties for the match fell to
Jenna Hathazi who filled the shoes spectacularly on the day.Â
Harford's hard hitting Snow finished the day with an incredible 13 aces and
Julia Gatch added 4 kills with 0 errors in the match. The best moment of the match came at the very end as
Mary Greig came off the bench to play in just her 6th match of the season and slammed home the match-winning kill.
Coach
Will Wheeler was pleased with his team's performance in the match, "For only our second time playing at home this season, I am extremely proud of our team and where we are. Every match we show improvement and execute what we practice. With such a young team, playing this well this quickly, I couldn't have asked for a better team of Fighting Owls."
For their next match, the Fighting Owls will once again hit the road as they travel to West Virginia to take on Potomac State on Saturday September 24th for a 1 PM start time.
