Harford Wins Overtime Thriller Over Southern Maryland

  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls had to grind out a win against a tough Southern Maryland squad, but were able to come away with an overtime win in their first conference contest of the season.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harford jumped out to an 11 point lead 10 minutes into the game after five consecutive made three pointers by Evason Ogbonna, Khalil Williams-Diggins, Michael Micklos and two by Carlos Done.
  • Southern Maryland crawled their way back to just a two point deficit at halftime then took a 45-44 lead early in the second half.
  • The Fighting Owls responded back with another strong run, this time closer to the basket as layups by Done, Batur Sahinoz, Williams-Diggins, Joshua Ortiz and Da'Von Fludd propelled Harford to a 13 point lead with just 10 minutes left in regulation.
  • Once again the Hawks would not go gently as a late 15-4 run gave Southern Maryland an 81-78 lead with a minute left.
  • DeZ Brown came through with a basket and a foul, but missed the ensuing free throw with the rebound snagged by Williams-Diggins as he got fouled immediately to send him to the line.
  • He would go on to make both to take the lead back, but an Ortiz foul sent Southern Maryland to the line as they took advantage of a couple free throws to take the lead back.
  • It was Martin Kelly Jr.'s turn as he got fouled with just eight seconds left and made both from the charity stripe to once again flip the lead.
  • With one last chance, Southern Maryland was fouled with two seconds left, but could only manage one free throw to tie the game and send it to overtime.
  • After a couple of Hawks baskets, Harford closed out the extra period on an 11-2 run to close out the game and come away with a big conference victory.
  • Williams-Diggins finished his breakout game with 27 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Kelly Jr. scored 20 points with 16 revounds.
  • Brown nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and an amazing seven blocks in the contest while Done added 10 points and Ogbonna with nine.
  • The Fighting Owls as a team were very efficient offensively, shooting 54% from the field and 35% from behind the arc, although were nearly done in by 26 turnovers in the game.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will travel to Frederick for another conference game on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 PM.
  • The Frederick Cougars are 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference after a 73-61 victory over Montgomery.
