Fighting Owls Drop Season Opener at Stevenson JV

Laubner's 20 saves not enough to save Harford in a tough game

  • The Short Story: The Harford men's lacrosse team opened the season with a hard fought loss against the Mustangs. Goalkeeper Jacob Laubner was fantastic in the game as he tallied 20 saves while star attackman Tyler Wagoner continued his prolific collegiate career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyler Wagoner picked up where he left off last year, scoring the first goal of the 2017 season for the Fighting Owls. The sophomore attacker was a first team All-Conference and All-Region player in 2016 where he led the conference in goals.
  • Kyle Barkley scored his first collegiate goal just two minutes after Wagoner in the second quarter.
  • After Wagoner doubled up thanks to a Nick Esser assist, Chandler Schmidt scored his first career goal with Andy Stump assisting.
  • Brandon Johnston scored a man up goal early in the fourth quarter with Luigi Ascenzi scoring the first goal of his promising career.
  • Jacob Laubner was truly great between the pipes, tallying a career high 20 saves as he was peppered with shots all night long.

GAME QUOTES AND NOTES:
  • Head coach Aaron Verardi: "We played tough all four quarters. We knew it would be a battle and our guys came out with a lot of energy and focus. It was our first game and we made a lot of plays and a few key mistakes. We are going to learn from this game and move forward."
  • The last time these two teams player, Stevenson's JV team defeated the Fighting Owls 20-4 in 2015 which makes this result look that much better.
 
 
UP NEXT:
  • Harford will next face CCBC Catonsville on Tuesday, February 3 at 3 PM.
  • The Cardinals have dropped to club status for the 2017 season and therefore this game will not count for the conference standings.
