Harford Sweeps Weekend Series Against Mercyhurst

Luke Johnson finds his power stroke with a great few games at the plate

  • The Short Story: The Harford baseball team earned a much needed three game sweep at home over Mercyhurst NE including a walk off hit in game three by CJ Lopez.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

  • After a tough doubleheader loss to Mercer County in the previous week, the Fighting Owl bats exploded for 23 runs includin;8g a couple of grand slams. 
  • Luke Johnson led the way with a couple of home runs including a grand slam and 6 RBIs.
  • Nick Atkinson came off the bench to also hit a grand slam.
  • Tre Todd hit his second lead off home run and third of the season.
  • Tim Kranz picked up his third win of the season, going 5.0 innings with four strikeouts.
  • Joe Smeton made his first appearance of the year going 1.1 innings with no runners reaching base and two strikeouts.
GAME 2 
  • The Fighting Owl bats stayed hot in the morning game of day two with Tre Todd, Toby Sponseller, Luke Johnson, Ryan Calhoun and Tanner Forry having multi-hit games with Todd hitting a pair of doubles and Forry smacking a triple to the right field warning track.
  • Will Reed was on his game, as he struck seven in 4.0 innings giving up just one run in the game as he carried a perfect game into the fourth inning.
  • Frankie Frashcetti pitched a 1-2-3 inning in his second appearance of the year to close out the mercy-rule shortened game.
GAME 3
  • The final game of the series was marred by a plethora of errors from both teams.
  • John Mastrangelo doubled home Adam Rapp in the second to take the lead then a couple of runs in the third by the Saints was cancelled out by another Luke Johnson home run.
  • Mercyhurst scored four runs in the fourth inning with a couple of Harford errors hurting the cause.
  • The Fighting Owls responded again in the bottom half with Shawn Nickles hitting a two-out double and was driven in by Nick Atkinson.
  • Adam Rapp hit a big two run single in the fifth inning and later scored on a Joey Schwartz RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
  • Mercyhurst scored a run to take the lead by in the top half of the final inning.
  • Once again Harford answered when pinch hitter Tre Todd took a two-out walk.
  • Peyton Sorrels also came in as a pinch hitter and singled to put the tying run on third and the winning run on second.
  • That set the stage for CJ Lopez to play the hero as a line drive to center field scored two for a dramatic walk-off victory.

UP NEXT
  • Harford will stay at home for a game on Wednesday, March 8th at 4 PM against Delaware County.
  • This will be the season opener for the visiting Phantoms.
