Harford Wins Region 20 Championship

Fighting Owls bats break out for 16 runs in the championship rout

  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls won their fourth Region 20 Division I championship in six years and their second straight title as they dominated the #3 seed host Hagerstown Hawks. Adam Rapp and John Mastrangelo each belted out home runs to right field to lead Harford in a 16 run outburst by Harford.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks came into the championship game after an arduous battle with Potomac State.
  • The Fighting Owls scored 16 runs on just 11 hits with Hagerstown suffering six errors in the game along with Harford also drawing nine walks.
  • Tre Todd, Peyton Sorrels and Tanner Forry all had multi-hit games while Forry, Rapp, Ryan Shinn and CJ Lopez all earned multiple walks.
  • Forry swiped four bags on the day as Harford snatched seven steals in the game.
  • John Mastrangelo jacked his second home run in as many days with Rapp also hitting a laser beam over the right field wall as he finished with a game high four RBIs.
  • Harford turned to Mike Taylor who battled through three innings with Truman Thomas and Tim Kranz each getting through a couple innings each.
  • Kranz picked up the win along the way after a couple of innings with just one hit and no runs including three strikeouts as he improves to 11-0 on the year.
  • Justin Fox got through the eighth inning and Reid Frazier struck out a couple in a flawless ninth to close out the game.
  • Harford had five players named to the All-Tournament team: Michael Devecchio, Will Reed, Peyton Sorrels, Tre Todd and Tanner Forry.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will now go to the district tournament in Florence, S.C. as the #2 seed where they will face #3 seed USC Lancaster in the first round on Thursday, May 18 at 3:30 PM.
  • The Lancers are 39-15 on the season including a 7-6 loss against Potomac State early in the season.
  • Host Florence-Darlington Tech goes into the tournament as the #1 seed and they will play #4 seed Monroe College in the first round.
  • The winner of the district tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NJCAA Juco World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
