Sophomores Lead the Way in Exciting Five Set Victory

Trio of Harford veterans help Harford persevere in season opener

  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls started out the 2017 season with a dramatic five set victory on the road at Harcum College with sophomore stars Jenna Hathazi and Savannah Meyers coming through in the clutch for Harford.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A 9-1 run in the first set forced the Harcum to call a timeout with Harford up 17-12 after trailing for much of the opening stanza.
  • Harford ran off a five point run with Allie Hallameyer getting a couple of aces in the process which allowed Madison Scarpulla a chance to close out the first set with a spike.
  • The second set was a back and forth affair that saw freshmen Raechel Bowman and Kendall Henderson get their first collegiate kills in back-to-back points but Harford dropped the set to tie the match.
  • The Fighting Owls trailed the third set 23-18 but made a furious comeback, winning five of six points to make it a 24-23 Harcum lead thanks to kills by Scrapulla and Jenna Hathazi.
  • Harcum called a timeout on their fourth attempt at a set point and came through to take the lead 2-1.
  • Hathazi came out blazing in the start of the fourth set with a pair of aces along with a slew of attack errors by Harcum to get the Fighting Owls ahead 9-2. Hathazi picked up a trio of kills and assisted on a couple of spikes by Olivia Manraksa and Savannah Meyers to easily force a fifth set tiebreaker.
  • The fifth set was a thrilling affair with eight ties as the two teams exchanged blows.
  • Harford took the lead 10-9 on a block by Meyers and Hathazi followed by a Hathazi ace and a Manraksa kill.
  • With Harford up 12-10, Savannah Meyers stuffed an attack that was hit right down the middle for a massive solo block and followed that up with a kill to close out a thrilling match.

GAME NOTES
  • Harford and Harcum last matched up in 2013 in what was also a season opener that Harford won in straight sets.
  • The Fighting Owls have now won their last seven consecutive season openers.
  • Jenna Hathazi was one dig shy of a triple-double as she had 11 kills, 16 assists, and nine digs along with five aces in the contest.
  • Freshman libero Leah Sanders led all Fighting Owls with 17 digs.
     
UP NEXT
  • Harford will get right back on the bus to head south for a tournament in South Carolina hosted by Spartanburg Methodist that will include four matches over a two day period against the host school as well as Davidson County and Walters State.
  • The Fighting Owls have not faced against any of those three schools in the Harford athletics modern era.
