HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northampton came into the match ranked #6 in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll after a 31-3 record in 2016 that included a trip to the DIII National Tournament in Minnesota.
  • The Spartans rode a 9-0 run early in the first set to get out to a dominating lead.
  • Harford clawed their way back, winning five of six including a Raechel Bowman ace, but Northampton responded with four in a row to ice the opening set.
  • Kyning Tillinghast got some big hits early in the second set as Harford jumped out to a 10-4 lead.
  • Julia Gatch, coming off a preseason injury, saw her season debut in the second set and added a kill that was sandwiched by Madison Scarpulla picking up a kill and an ace with Harford holding onto a 22-15 lead in the set.
  • Savannah Meyers was blazing hot in the second set with five kills including one that gave Harford four set points.
  • Northampton proceeded to win six straight points to close out the second set 26-24.
  • The third set was dominated by a nine point streak for the Spartans that included six aces as the visiting team closed out the match.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore Savannah Meyers returned from a minor injury to easily lead the team in kills with nine.
  • Madison Scarpulla led the team with 11 digs with Jenna Hathazi close behind with 9.
  • Hathazi and Kyning Tillinghast split the setting duties once again with the former getting 11 assists while the latter added seven.

UP NEXT
  • Harford will hit the road for the start of a three match stretch against conference opponents beginning with Montgomery on Wednesday, September 6 at 6 PM.
  • The Raptors will participate in the Dragon Invitational at Howard CC to begin their season before hosting the Fighting Owls.
