HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harford got off to an electric 7-2 start ignited by a three pointer from Mekhi Willis and Carlos Done's fast break dunk.
  • The two teams would trade blows the rest of the first half, with the Fighting Owls holding a slight lead on the Nighthawks for the remaining 17 minutes.
  • Nighthawks forward Drew Jackson scored six points as part of an 11-5 run to end the half, leaving Northern Virginia down 29-28 with 20 minutes left to play.
  • The non-conference foes swapped 6-0 streaks early in the second, as Northern Virginias Frank Agyemang's four points and Harford's Isaiah Boggs two baskets paced both sides.
  • NOVA grabbed the lead at the 12:02 mark thanks to seven points from Muhammed Saadeldeen, but Harford would claw their way ahead once again with a 12-8 run sparked by Done's five points.
  • The non-conference foes continued to share the lead down the stretch, with Northern Virginia grabbing a 67-65 advantage with less than two minutes left. Malik Jones would keep the Fighting Owls in the game with his eight points including a pair of threes.
  • Neither team scored again until the final 43 seconds when the Nighthawks would sink a free throw. Martin Kelly Jr.'s layup eight seconds later closed the gap to one and put Harford within striking distance.
  • After a Nighthawks' layup and a Fighting Owls miss forced Harford to put Northern Virginia on the line with nine seconds left, where they would make both free throws to extend their lead to five.
  • Jones would get to the line for Harford with three seconds left, sinking his first free throw but missing the second. The men in blue would force NOVA to call a timeout off the rebound, setting up a critical last two seconds.
  • The Fighting Owls showed strong defense out of the break, causing Northern Virginia to commit a five second inbound violation. Harford's inbound to a soaring DeZ Brown caused a Nighthawk defender to commit a foul, sending Brown to the line to shoot two.
  • Brown would make the first free throw and intentionally miss the second in order for Harford to have a chance at tying the game. NOVA would foil the Fighting Owls' plan, scooping up the rebound and leaving the game with a 73-69 win.
