Harford Sweeps Conference Championships

  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls men's basketball team completed the conference sweep as they took down Cecil 71-62. Harford's Martin Kelly Jr. led all scorers with 17 points and 10 rebounds on his way to being named the tournament MVP.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Khalil Williams-Diggins started Harford out well with a steal and fast break basket to get Harford the lead just 30 seconds in.
  • Cecil took the lead at 14-11 on an eight point run, but a foul by Cecil's Jordan Griggs was called followed by him receiving a technical foul to put him on the bench with three fouls and gave Evason Ogbonna a chance to make four straight free throws to take the lead.
  • With Harford down five, Carlos Done's layup started a 9-0 Fighting Owls run to ensure
  •  Harford struggled with turnovers in the first half, but made up for it by getting to the line 22 times and making 19 as they went into the break with a 36-31 lead.
  • The Fighting Owls came out attacking the rim in the second half, with Batur Sahinoz and Williams-Diggins making layups along with a big dunk by DeZ Brown got Harford up by nine.
  • Jones would later hit another three pointer then Kelly would get a tip in to get Harford up to an 11 point lead at 50-39.
  • Cecil would charge all the way back to just a one point Harford lead before the boys in blue went on a 10-0 run with Martin Kelly Jr. scoring 6 of those points capped off by a monster slam.
  • From there it was just a matter of free throws which the Fighting Owls were well accustomed to in the game as they shot 33-40 from the free throw line to close out the conference championship.
  • Martin Kelly Jr. was named the tournament MVP in part thanks to his 17 points and 10 rebounds while Malik Jones added 16 including an 8-9 performance from the free throw line.
  • Evason Ogbonna played some crucial minutes as he added 8 points and a couple of blocks while DeZ Brown scored 7 with 6 rebounds.

UP NEXT
  • Harford will close out their regular season schedule at the College of Southern Maryland on Monday, February 26 at 6 pm.
  • The Southern Maryland Hawks are 15-11 on the year and are coming off a big upset victory over Allegany in the conference tournament quarterfinals before falling to Cecil in overtime of the semifinals.
