 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Owls went on an early 9-0 run fueled by Khalil Williams-Diggins and DeZ Brown each making layups as Harford looked to attack the rim early and often.
  • Prince George's got hot midway through the first half with a 20-3 run, taking a 36-25 lead with four minutes left in the first half before Martin Kelly Jr. hit a tough three pointer to break the momentum.
  • Harford's full court press started to pay off late in the opening period as Malik Jones got back-to-back steals which he parlayed into fast break baskets for himself and Kelly.
  • Prince George's picked it up again in the last few minutes with a 10-2 run and went into the break with a 48-37 halftime lead.
  • Kelly led the charge back early in the second half with a trio of baskets including a long range three which along with Isaiah Boggs attacking the rim got Harford to a one point deficit at 53-52.
  • The two teams went back and forth for much of the second half with Harford finding a ton of success driving the lane, especially Boggs who dropped 17 in the second half including 8-9 from the floor with all eight baskets coming in the paint.
  • The Fighting Owls free throw shooting woes continued to haunt them late in the game as Prince George's was able to make a buzzer beater to tie it at 82-82 and send it to overtime.
  • In the extra period, Harford finally started to make free throws, shooting an astonishing 21 free throws in the five extra minutes of play, making 12 of them to close out a crazy 98-93 win.
  • Harford's top three leading scorers all fouled out of the game as Boggs led the way with 26 points, Kelly scored 23 points and 10 rebounds while Khalil Williams-Diggins added 15.
  • DeZ Brown added another double-double to his record with 10 points and 13 rebounds and Malik Jones added 14 points off the bench.
  • Karon Green scored six points, but fouled out after just nine minutes of play as Harford's fourth member who was disqualified in the contest.
  • Freshman guard Isaiah Boggs: "In that second half, I felt like they couldn't stop me so I kept attacking the rim. The coaches told us this game would come down to who wanted it more. In the end, we proved we wanted it more and won that championship. This is goal number one accomplished, but we still have more goals to accomplish this year with the main goal to go back to the national tournament."
  • Head coach Mike Smelkinson: "This wasn't our best shooting performance, especially at the free throw line. But in the end, the team fought their way through adversity in a tough road conference game and earned a big win for the championship. I am very proud of the way we competed to come back in the second half with great defense and being aggressive to the basket on offense."
