  • Location: Bel Air, Md. – Harford Baseball Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls closed out the month of April in epic fashion with a doubleheader against the ASA Avengers. Game one featured an incredible 17-15 comeback victory, while Harford powered their way through game two for a 19-4 blowout to complete the sweep.
  • Box Scores:
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Truman Thomas sat ASA down in order in the first and the Fighting Owls provided him a two-run cushion in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Avengers went up 3-2 in the top of the second with a bases clearing triple, but Nick Rowland's RBI-double and Ryan Calhoun's three-run single put Harford back up 6-3.
  • Momentum seemed to be in ASA's favor as they pushed past six runs in the third. The Brooklyn-based college would then hold Harford to just two hits until the seventh while scoring seven more for a 15-6 lead.
  • With three outs to go the Fighting Owls started to scratch and claw their way back into the game, picking up a couple of hits before scoring off a balk.
  • Joey Schwartz seemed to fly out for the second out of the inning, but Harford manager Tom Eller would challenge the play after the right fielder dropped the ball in transition. The umpires would rule in favor of Eller and awarded Schwartz first base.
  • The ruling proved to have rippling implications for both teams, as Nick D'Amore home run drove in Schwartz to make it 15-10. ASA would allow Harford to load the bases before walking in one run to cut their lead down to 15-11.
  • The Avengers secured their second out of the inning with a strikeout to put Harford on the hot seat. With the game on the line Spencer Smith stepped up to the plate and smashed a double to right center, clearing the bases and shrinking the gap to 15-14.
  • Smith's double would allow Ryan Calhoun a shot at tying the game. The sophomore infielder made use of the opportunity, hitting a double of his own to tie the game at 15-15.
  • Joey Schwartz completed Harford's comeback in epic fashion, sending a ball over center field wall to hand the Fighting Owls a 17-15 walk-off victory.
Game 2
  • Controversy reigned supreme early in game two, with ASA's Miguel Medina having his leadoff home run called foul. Medina left no doubt two pitches later, homering to left center for a 1-0 Avengers lead.
  • Spencer Smith 17th home run of the season highlighted a six-run first for the Fighting Owls to put them ahead 6-1.
  • Michael Richardson's fourth home run of the season matched ASA's run in the second to keep Harford up by five.
  • Nick Rowland's three-run blast sparked a string of long balls, as Spencer Smith, Ryan Calhoun and Matthew Shilling would all go yard in the third to put Harford up 14-4.
  • The men in blue piled on more pressure in the fourth, plating five more runs en route to a 19-4 mercy rule win.
  • Nick Turnbull (4-0) allowed just five hits through three innings of work to earn the victory. Briar Lauer and Nick DeCarlo looked just as good in relief, with both allowing one hit in the fourth and fifth innings respectively to shut down ASA.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will remain at home to face Delaware Tech on Wednesday, May 1 at 6:30 pm.
  • Del Tech is 22-14 this season but will play Mercer County and Catonsville before heading to Harford.
