Largo, MD – Friday night was the annual battle of the Owls, as the Harford Fighting Owls travel to the Prince George's Owls in men's basketball action. The Prince George's Owls were previously ranked in the top 15 of the NJCAA D3 rankings and considered one of the strongest programs in division 3. In last season's contest, the game came down to a buzzer beater by
Chandler Johnson.
Harford jumped out to an early 12-2 lead in the 1
st half thanks to 7 quick points from
Malik Carson. However, Prince George's went on a 19-6 run to talk the lead mid-way in the 1
st half. The streaky Owls went on another run (19-10) and extended their lead over Harford to 12 points as the teams went into the break.
As the second half began, it looked as if Prince George's would pull away for good. The Owls stretched their lead to its largest margin (15 points) 6 minutes into the 2
nd half. But following a Prince George's timeout, Harford went on an incredible 20-2 run over the next 10 minutes and retook the lead.
Maseo Carson and
Jahsiah Lamothe were the catalysts for the Fighting Owl turnaround as they collectively scored 15 of the 20 points.
As the teams traded baskets, the clock was winding down for what seemed to be a repeat of last year's buzzer beater. At the 1:13 mark, the teams were deadlocked at 61-61. A quick timeout by Coach Jelen-Joy proved to be a decisive moment as he called Lamothe's number to give the Fighting Owls the lead for good. Lamothe scored a personal best, 20 points while adding 8 rebounds while
Maseo Carson led the game with 23 points.
A strong Harford defensive effort limited Prince George's season leading scorer, Deonte Cooke, to only 11 points.
