BEL AIR, MD -- When the final student-athlete academic awards were announced last month 40 different Fighting Owls earned All NJCAA, Region 20 and/or Maryland JUCO Conference Academic Team honors.
Men's soccer led the way with 13 student-athletes, followed by women's volleyball (6), baseball (5), men's lacrosse (4), three each for women's soccer,women's tennis and men's tennis, two from softball and one from women's basketball.
"Our student athletes are students first," said Athletic Director Ed Leisch. "We create a culture that emphasizes the importance of academics and community engagement before athletics. Our culture prepares our student athletes to be leaders on the field and in the community."
Fighting Owl's men's soccer earned NJCAA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team after compiling a 3.04 team grade point average. They are the only Region 20 and one of just seven men's soccer teams in the country to earn the honor.
On the national level, 12 Fighting Owls earned NJCAA All-Academic First Team honors by finishing the year with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Student-athletes with a GPA of 3.80-3.99 earned second team and those with a GPA of 3.60-3.79 earned third team.
