Harford Men's Lacrosse Squanders Six-Goal Lead, Falls in OT, 13-12 to No. 8 Hudson Valley

Box Score

BEL AIR, Md.
—The Harford men's lacrosse team squandered a 6-0 first half lead as it fell to No. 8 Hudson Valley in overtime, 13-12, on Monday at Harford Stadium.

The Fighting Owls (4-2) held the lead for three-and-a-half quarters, before the scrappy Vikings (1-1) took their first lead of the game, 12-11 with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Craig Hanzelka (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood), who also scored the Owls' first goal of the game, knotted the score a little over a minute later at the 5:36 mark with what would eventually become the Owls final goal.

Harford looked to be in trouble in the final seconds of regulation as sophomore Russell Harrell (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne/Johns Hopkins) was whistled for a delay of game penalty and during his penalty time, freshman Matt Wood (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) incurred a holding infraction.  Fortunately for Harford, the Vikings' only shot fell wide forcing the game to overtime.

With no face-off due to Wood's penalty as time expired in the fourth, Hudson took possession to start the 4:00 extra time and needed just two shots to take the comeback win, the first being blocked by a Harford defender and the second, from Rich Bamberger finding its mark for the 13-12 overtime win.

Bamberger led Hudson Valley with seven points (5g, 2a) on the day, while freshmen Dane Grudzien (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) and Matt Vickers (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) each tallied hat tricks for Harford.

The Vikings outshot Harford, 41-33, and dominated at the X, winning 19 of 27 battles, while corralling 72 ground balls to Harford's 50.  Harford did best its opponent with two extra man goals in three opportunities, while Hudson was 0-5 and freshman Mike Miller (Parkville, Md./Parkville) totaled 11 saves in 60:00, while the Vikings' Alan Hiltz made eight saves in the 60:00.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Sunday when they travel to Lycoming to face the jayvee squad at 1:00 p.m.
